What Are the Benefits of IPL Treatment for Dry Eye?

If your eyes feel gritty and uncomfortable by the afternoon, you may have tried everything to find relief. Between the countless eye drops, heat masks, and screen breaks, you feel like something should be working, but the relief never lasts long enough to get through your busy day managing household schedules and activities.

That’s why at EyeTech Optometry of Richmond, we offer intense pulsed light therapy (IPL). IPL is designed to provide longer-lasting relief for many people with evaporative dry eye by targeting inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction, which can interfere with the eye's natural tear film.

An Overview of IPL Technology

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy uses gentle pulses of light to target inflammation around your eyelids. The controlled light energy helps reduce inflammation and improve meibomian gland function, supporting a healthier tear film. At our clinic, we use one of the few Health Canada-approved IPL devices for dry eye treatment, allowing us to provide patients with a clinically supported option for managing dry eye disease.

This noninvasive treatment includes a brief IPL session followed by a meibomian gland expression performed by the optometrist to help maximize the treatment’s effectiveness. The entire appointment takes about 30 minutes, making it a convenient option even for those with busy schedules.

Key Benefits You Can Expect from IPL Treatment

Longer-Lasting Relief from Dry Eye Symptoms

Because IPL treatment helps stabilize your tear film, it can help reduce the burning and stinging sensations associated with dry eye that make it difficult to carry out daily tasks comfortably. You may notice less grittiness and irritation throughout your day, whether you're driving to appointments or managing household tasks.

Many patients experience improved comfort when reading or using screens for extended periods. This means you can focus on what matters most without constant eye discomfort interrupting your activities.

Improved Tear Quality and Oil Production

IPL may help improve the flow of oils produced by the meibomian glands, which support tear stability and eye comfort. This improved tear quality means your eyes stay comfortable for hours, not just minutes. Some patients notice that they have less reliance on artificial tears as their own tears are more balanced.

Minimal Downtime and Side Effects

Another key benefit of IPL is how quick the appointments are. Depending on the individual, IPL therapy can last around 15 minutes without harsh side effects, so you can return to your normal activities immediately after treatment.

Most people experience only temporary mild redness around the treatment area that fades within a few hours. The procedure requires no special care afterward, so you can continue with your daily routine without interruption.

What to Expect During Your IPL Sessions

Your First Treatment Visit

The eye doctor will perform a comprehensive dry eye evaluation to assess your specific condition and determine whether IPL is the right treatment for you. Your assessment includes advanced testing using our Myah technology, which captures images of your meibomian glands, measures your tear break-up time and tear meniscus height, and performs a blink analysis. We review these results with you to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique symptoms and the underlying cause of your dry eye.

Trained professionals administer all of our procedures, so you can relax knowing you’re in good hands. During IPL therapy, we will fit you with sterilized eye cups that offer maximum protection to sensitive eye tissues, and a cool gel is applied to the skin around your eyes for comfort during treatment.

The Treatment Process

Light pulses are carefully applied to the skin around your eyes, targeting the areas where oil glands are located. Most people feel only mild warmth during the treatment, similar to a gentle zap sensation.

Your Common Questions Answered

How Many IPL Treatments Will I Need?

Everyone responds to treatment differently, which is why we don’t take a 1-size-fits-all approach. All of our treatments are tailored to your individual needs.

Some people may notice relief from dry eye symptoms after their first session as inflammation begins to reduce. Others begin to notice more significant improvement after 2–3 treatments, with the full benefits typically developing over 6–8 weeks.

Each treatment session should be spaced between 2-4 weeks apart to keep your skin happy and comfortable.

Will I Need Maintenance Sessions?

Many patients enjoy relief for months after completing their initial treatment series. The duration of benefits varies from person to person based on factors such as age and overall eye health.

For many people, dry eye is a long-term problem, so touch-up sessions every 3 months may be recommended to help maintain your results if symptoms return. The frequency of maintenance treatments depends on how your eyes respond to the initial series.

Two weeks after your last IPL treatment, we will see you back for a Dry Eye Follow-Up appointment, at no charge to you, to administer the same tests we took before treatment. This allows us to go over before-and-after results with you and personally tailor your maintenance care.

Who Is a Good Candidate for IPL Treatment?

IPL works well for people with evaporative dry eye, where meibomian gland dysfunction plays a role in preventing proper tear film formation. If artificial tears don't provide enough relief for your daily activities, IPL might be an excellent option.

You may also be a good candidate if your dry eye symptoms interfere with daily activities like driving, reading, or using devices. Many patients find IPL particularly helpful when other treatments haven't provided lasting relief.

When IPL May Not Be Suitable

Recent intense sun exposure or tanned skin can affect the safety and effectiveness of treatment. Certain medications that increase light sensitivity may also make IPL unsuitable for some patients.

Active eye infections or injuries need to heal completely before IPL treatment can begin. Our eye care team can evaluate these factors during your consultation to make sure IPL is safe for you.
